The time between day and night when it's difficult to drive
The problem is that the values don't come from any deep or real place, from any reasonable, civilized analysis about what hasn't worked in the past and why.
Perhaps such analysis would frighten us, to the degree that we would become paralyzed.
So we look ahead, building pretty much the same old thing, as if it's all we can do because it is all we can do, and there's nothing wrong with it and everything wrong with it at the same time.
Once it's built, people with high cholesterol wearing clothes that will never really fit them, purchased off the rack from Old Navy at the mall, move in. At first we're repelled by the thought that we are one of them, but the more time we spend there, standing in line waiting for our small bag of buttered popcorn and a diet Coke, the more beautiful each one of them becomes, until we are just like them, all children of God.
It's good to be among people with no illusions, whether they vote in the primaries or not, at least for a little while. The place to weep is in private, listening to music that moves you, knowing the composer thinks that, "music is made of us listening to each other."
