Last night at dinner I tried to explain Christian Science to an intelligent woman, and failed. No matter what I said my explanations failed to explain Christian Science. Later, I realized I would have done better had she not been so intelligent.
"Color is bullshit," Cartier-Bresson is said to have said to William Eggleston at a dinner some time ago. Had I said, "Christian Science is science fiction" to the intelligent lady at dinner last night, that sort of intelligence would no doubt have provided the kind of explanation the lady was seeking.
When we say what we mean without adornment we always give ourselves a chance to be understood, if not to another at least to ourselves. Most often now I like to lie on the floor with a little pillow behind my head and not do anything that won't come out all on its own to meet me.
