Across the street from The Cliff House

From that place where what's being paid attention to begins to look different because it's being paid attention to.

Hindus have a word for the concept of imbuing something so strongly with a god's characteristics that the thing becomes not only godlike, but god.

To be sick is to be full of what's outside of you, and to see your life that way. It's an adjustment in which the body is turned upside-down and one's brain is no more responsible for one's consciousness than one's feet. It's best to lay still and find some good in it, give up, cancel appointments, sleep as long as you can.

This is real silence: not hearing god when I was asking to be heard, not feeling I was being listened to, and giving up. And  waking, seeing the glass of water beside the bed, thinking there's nothing more beautiful than a glass of water, something clear contained in something clear.

Then finally feeling good enough to go outside and walk along the beach at sunset.
