Homage to the Square, Salt Lake City

Joseph Albers opened Spencer's front door on Richards Street and was transfixed by the vivid shapes of two predominant colors.

Not long after returning to New Haven from the Beehive State, Albers began his series of paintings, 'Homage to the Square'.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Spencer was deep into the composition of his groundbreaking 'Synaptic Bodies', music of which there is no earthly notation, when he stepped outside to take the air and beheld the very same shapes and colors that had so moved Albers years before.
