Sight: A Conversation with Brooks

At an uncertain, and largely cloudy age, you begin to see things you’ve only just remembered out of the corner of your eye, dots, apparitions, eels, small birds like sparrows. In my case, sight favors my left eye, the clearer eye, clearer than the right.

What do you see, Brooks?

That the whole country is a cow town.

Brooks, can you please explain?

In the morning when I pour the coffee into my cup it sounds like horses galloping over a beautiful green field, and I believe I’m on the right track. But by nighttime I’ve regressed into a kind of sleeplessness that’s another form of aimless travel.

I’m sorry to hear this, Brooks. Please continue…

It’s really sobering when I realize I’m surrounded by idiots who run the country from coast-to-coast. The onramps and offramps are controlled by goons who work for interstate PAC’s and conservative think-tanks like the Supreme Court. I can hear the mooing of the cows then…the fragrance dissipates only when I hold my nose.

Brooks, is the situation really that dreadful?

No, it’s much, much worse. It could be that Nationalism is the answer, and that the next type of King might be crowned soon on Social Media.

This is depressing, Brooks. I thought we lived in a democracy!

We live under the banner of Democracy, but we might as well just vote for celebrities and go on to the next iteration of idiocy in which the godfather becomes the godmother and vice-versa.

Brooks, you’ve lost me there…

I’m sorry! I have many false fears that are real whether or not they’re false.

O my goodness, I’m so sorry to hear this Brooks!

Please don’t be sorry and please don’t pity me. I’m at peace with the situation. Stoicism is saving my life, and the anonymous taxonomy of indifferent donors is helping to clear the playing field. I’m a big picture kind of guy who sees endless possibilities in this war on clear thinking and opportunity.
