This morning while shopping at Safeway

A Poem

I know now that fifty years is not that long a time,

that stars come up from the bottom of a glass of mineral water at 2 a.m., take a quick look around and decide to disappear,

and that women have done most of the work.

What else do I know?

I enjoy remembering my past life, it's probably the best thing about me.

We The People may now be divided into three camps--1) those who actually watch and listen 2) those who don't tell me anything I don't already know and 3) those who continue to piss downstream.

I understand promotion, that everything now is one form of promotion or another, and that promotion has served us well for the most part.  I understand that if you've made a great painting or written a poem or, god forbid, a book you want people to know about it. But maybe it's time for some other kind of promotion, something that has enough frivolous content to be spiritual.

What is the best brand of hot dog? I wish I knew. And what is literature really good for? Everyone who reads seems to have an opinion and, though no one really seems to know for sure, many livelihoods are derived from it.
