"Last Place Aversion" is a sociological condition in which the next-to-bottom will give to the next-to-the top inside of the bottom in order to avoid being on the bottom themselves.

Translation: people nearly always give money to the less well-off person, except for the second-to-last ranking people who give money to the better-off person with considerable frequency.

Further translation: people who make just above the minimum wage are surprisingly not in favor of raising it.

Thelonious Monk, the late jazz master, gave this advice to a drummer who'd just joined his group: "just swing and make everybody move to certain places and the rest will take care of itself. You already know how to play. Now play wrong and make that right."
