Ruby Beach, Olympic Peninsula
I told my granddaughter, Grace, to our right is Japan.
Let's go there next, she said.
First we have to go to the island with the lighthouse, I said, and pick up provisions.
I explained, 'provisions,' and pointed to the lighthouse on the small island about a mile offshore.
How will we get there, she asked.
We'll have to build a wooden ship, I said.
So Grace started collecting driftwood, anything she could find--sticks, pieces of bark, little logs--until she lost interest and began looking in tide pools for sea urchins, starfish, and baby crabs.
