A large part of the newspaper's project is to encourage its readers to keep faith in the socio-political system it serves, while nimbly demonstrating the advisability of striving to be in that system's upper tier, the 1 or 2 percent so often cited, so as to make or to influence the decisions made by that system and to purchase the luxury goods the newspaper advocates.

It's posed as a serious question but when he asks it out loud to a small group of his friends they shake their heads sadly as if he's said something terribly wrong.
