Oregon coast

My contribution to the art of being a human being is the realization that my body will never be the same.

It's not a bad thing; instead of walking to the lighthouse, I'm walking away from the lighthouse.

I still march against war, but I do it from a distance, knowing now that world war is an everyday event and that the war I'm most against is the one that will be fought forever.

I'm having the time of my life--just when I think I've seen everything I see something else.

A whole day can go by with its cellphone turned off.

By evening it hurts a little to walk. My left knee makes a soft little sound, almost like it's breathing, every time my left foot makes contact with the sand, but I can't stop myself from chasing my little granddaughters around and around until we're all laughing.
