A Little Dab Will Do Ya
Nanao Sakaki's poem about consumption and its downfalls (Ladies and Gentlemen!, to be found on pg. 46 of his book, "How to Live On The Planet Earth, Collected Poems" (Blackberry Books, 2013), contains these lines,
gunpowdered ghost skull of trees,
infernal factory kicks out pulp--paper
pile up, heap up, high up in supermarket
TOILET PAPER
it's coming
a flood of toilet paper
like diarrhea
together with all creatures
the flood will carry us down into Hades
The apparently eternal desire to appear beautiful in the eyes of others, which reached new heights in the 1950's, the golden age of advertising, is celebrated by Michael Meloan in his re-creation of a classic 1950's ad jingle:
