Fashion god
It's amusing to read the New York Times 'Styles' section Thursday and Sunday and see how good people are at describing themselves in terms of what they're wearing.
I'm going to give it a try: Levi's relaxed fit jeans, slate-colored J Crew t-shirt with pocket under a dark long-sleeve striped Haupt shirt (untucked), and tan Ecco slip-ons, easy to get in and out of and good for standing in line at TSA at SFO.
I look pretty good, which is to say I have a style all my own, that is, that nobody else will be wearing what I'm wearing today. And so I'll have myself all to myself and whoever else is fortunate enough to see me.
Wallace Stevens wrote, "the whole of appearance is a toy."
Stevens always, always gives me something to think about whenever I read him. People should be required to read Wallace Stevens everyday, just like people are required to wear clothes, because the world would look much differently to people if people did.
I believe clothes have feelings and that when something feels good on you you should wear it, and that if something doesn't feel good on you you shouldn't wear it. I know it sounds stupid, but I believe in the fashion god and this is what the fashion god says.
Whether there really is god or isn't isn't the problem, it's that we should act as if there is one and look like we know what we're doing.
