Grace, C-SPAN, and Julian Assange

The art is Grace's, 5, of Portland, Oregon. She likes to make little tableaus and leave them here and there in the house where she lives. They're really perfect little creations as far as I can see, free of theory and therefore innocent, able to deconstruct as quickly as they're put together. Best of all, Grace makes up a story for every one she makes.

I watched C-SPAN last night. It's always compelling in an election year. Obama spoke in Iowa, as did Paul Ryan. Mitt was in Florida at a restaurant with a Spanish name. Each appearance ended with music appropriate to the candidate's mien. It's Springsteen for Obama. Romney's sounded a little alt. country, but the lyrics posited 'lemonade stands' and 'riding along in a Chevrolet' so I guess he too stayed true to his demographic. Ryan's an interesting case. I watched him work his way through the crowd with the overweight Republican Gov. of Iowa. I had the thought that he won't ever be Vice-President, but if he gets through this he might be President someday.

Ryan and Obama have a similar vibe; I'm not sure what it is. They're both pretty young for the game, have that same sort of ingenuous energy. But it's more than that. I think what they share is that they're both living their own stories, whereas Mitt's living a story someone else made up for him.

After C-SPAN, I watched John Pilger's interview with Julian Assange.
