July 4

The fireworks left over from the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge will have to do.

Never underestimate the power small men have over larger ones, as their will is stupendous.

"Every poem is an exaggeration, carefully trammeled to fit the mood," Robert Frost is supposed to have said to Edward Hopper when they met in the 1940's.

Hopper's last painting, made in the year of his death, contains no human figure, but the shadow cast on the floor from the light coming in the window is quite alive, as much or more than many humans.

I watched Gone from the Wind last night, respectfully aired by TMC, which aired the full 15-minute intermission. So many great lines, but perhaps none greater than Scarlett saying to Rhett, "Great balls of fire, I had the baby, didn't I?" For me, he movie played somewhere between War and Peace and The Real Housewives of Atlanta (or Beverly Hills). Vivien Leigh is so beautiful, though it was difficult at times not to see her as an Englishwoman and married to Sir Laurence Olivier.

Today is a great big day--July 4. I can't wait to get out in it and goof around. In celebration, I will allow myself to eat as many Jalapeno Cheetos as I want.
