accessing the US OPEN and the new Twitter Headquarters
The magnitude of a major sporting event, such as the US OPEN, cannot be over-estimated, nor can the spectacle be communicated in mere words.
Just being there says worlds about who you are.
While your cellphone may be confiscated--unless you're on the payroll of NBC or The Golf Channel--the rewards of seeing Tiger warm up on the range and Ernie Els get up-and-down from a buried lie in the fringe on 14 far outweigh the loss. Drew, 33, born in the age of technology, said he "really liked being without his cellphone", as he was for 8 hours yesterday at The Olympic Club while walking and watching the US Open with his father, who kept careful tabs on the claim check for his own cellphone but liked living without it too.
After walking almost all 18 holes, which included a 3-hole viewing of 17-year old amateur Beau Hossler and a glimpse of Fred(dy) Couples, a non-contestant but walking inside the ropes alongside the two-some of Jim Furyk, whose 5-Hour Energy endorsement seems to have legs, and Tiger, looking natty in Nike off-whites, the notion that the tournament would finally be won by an international (Westwood, Els, or Frederic Jacobsen) took root.
(And thanks to Graham Chernoff--O Club member--for the plaques we guests hung around our necks that entitled us to the privilege of dining in the O Club hospitality suite where the famous O Club hamburgers are served up on hot dog buns and the beer is very cold.)
Meanwhile, access is granted on a simple adhesive label to guests visiting the new Twitter headquarters at Tenth and Market in 140 characters or less.
