The publisher receives a new manuscript: Mare Island, Vallejo
There's a book here.
Walking around Mare Island in the rain.
At one time, Mare Island was the US Navy's largest shipyard. Thousands of vessals were built here, ever since President Millard Fillmore reserved Mare Island for government use in 1850, two months after California was admitted to statehood.
The last boats were made on Mare Island in 1969, the famous 'Swift Boats' of the Vietnam era and PBR's (Patrol Boat River). The based was closed in 1993.
Walking around in the rain among all the beautiful and ruined buildings, among so much that's been left behind, abandoned, wasted, recycled, forgotten, is a strange pleasure, especially in the rain.
Mare Island is as good a museum as there is, full of sculpture and new painting.
