It's a beautiful thing, putting the letters in the composing stick all by yourself, watching a word come into being and then another word and another till the thing says what you've meant it to say, whether they're your words or someone else's. Tying off the type with string and placing it on the press bed. Then packing the furniture tightly around the words so the words can't move around, escape from themselves and lose their meaning.

If every word written or spoken was handled as carefully as a typesetter handles type it would be a much clearer world, with far fewer hurt feelings and misunderstandings.
