Last night at the Colophon Club meeting--held at Berkely City Club, a Julia Morgan masterpiece--a young woman writing a book on the transition from handwritten manuscripts to those produced mechanically said, 'you must remember, writing is all about rhythm.'

Robert Pogue Harrison's book, Forests, the Shadow of Civilization, presents that time of pre-history when forests created such a dense canopy that the first glimpse of the sky was so beyond the people seeing it that they 'had to picture the sky to themselves in the aspect of a huge animated body: a body not seen but imagined as there beyond the treetops.'

In Greek myth, you (a human) could never lay on eye on the gods or goddesses, but you were allowed to hear them as they thrashed around in the world.
