Jay DeFeo kept hundreds if not thousands of erasers in her studio. Toward the end of her life she used worn down erasers in her work, both literally and figuratively.

Art is a way of erasing what you see and replacing what you've erased with something new you've seen.

When art is art, art lights up with the conflict of the artist's obsession to make something of what interested him in the first place and to make something else out of whatever it was he was seeing.
