Liberal humanism

It's never a good time to be a liberal humanist.

You have to work alone, and the hours are long.

So there you sit in the exact center of the universe--thinking and thinking-- until you feel yourself somewhere near or in the center, the place every liberal humanist hopes to occupy.

It's quiet in there, but far from lonely, and time goes by in no time at all.

When you emerge, as clear as you'll ever be about your place in the world, its possibilities, the responsibilities you have to yourself and to others, you're amazed how few of you there are.

And that the world seems to operate with a vastly different set of values and concerns.

As long as you remain a liberal humanist you may never fail to be astonished by how few of you there are, and how many.

And the question remains, 'just what is a liberal humanist'?
